A business leader demonstrates how to activate potential with employees in a meetingWhy is it that “they” always seem to get the praise and the promotion? You work hard. You show up every day and deliver. Yet, it can feel as though you’re crossing a desert, a chasm where no positive feedback exists. Dehydrated and baked, it’s easy to wonder: When will it be my time?

Answering that question requires understanding that “the system” isn’t the same as it used to be. Before, when things were far less transparent and top-down management models were normal, the formula was clear: Make everything about you. The better you manipulated things to look good, the more rewards you received.

The new, connected and transparent economy punishes those with such ego. (Isn’t that a good thing?) Today, it’s no longer about you. It’s about others. Now, you increase how valuable you are in the system by bringing value to others.

Funny, isn’t it? Long before the system changed, mom and dad were right all along. It’s not about you, they told us. It’s about what you can do for others.

P.S. Of course, the best way to be of value to others is to activate potential within them that already exists. The video below explains what that looks like.
