(With apologies to our friends in the southern hemisphere.)
You’re an achiever. You’re conditioned to drive for results. While on vacation with family, the same leadership approach used at the office might find you driving home disappointed. Before you jump in the family van, shift gears by answering these questions – and ensure your summer vacation is best ever.
1) Am I prepared to let go of expectations I have for how others act (or even the degree to which they enjoy the vacation)?
2) In between the amusement park and family reunion, am I ready to seize the “ordinary” moments when magic happens?
3) What do I want those I love to remember: Where we went? Or, what we experienced?
4) What percentage of time do I want my family to experience me as “unplugged”?
5) What “to-do” list am I planning for my time away…that I can shorten (or do without) so I can experience life without lists?
6) How do I define a successful vacation?
7) What is my greatest motivation for adapting my driving leadership style – and make this the best summer vacation ever?
It’s not lost on high performers: Being your best on vacation is a key to being your best when you return to work. But this vacation isn’t for shareholders or customers, it’s for you. The choice of whether you enjoy it remains yours.
Enjoy.
PERFECT TIMING!!! My son has a short break in his studies right now and we are arranging a last minute break for him to join me to visit his grandfather in Florida. We’ll review this as we prepare for the trip, and we are certain to be better because of the insights. VERUS GLOBAL ROCKS!!!
Rich – thanks for sharing how you’ll use these questions with your son! Keep us posted on what makes your vacation with him best ever. Thanks for your support!
Excellent timing. I just returned from an 8 day trip in Europe with my 21 year old son. After spending this time with him, I was seriously worried about a 2 week vacation the entire family is taking to Ireland in August. I have plenty of time to review these questions with the family so we can make the most of our time together touring Ireland. Thanks Verus Global!!
Linda – here’s to a remarkable trip with your family in August. It’s great to hear you’ll be leveraging these questions to make your holiday even more extraordinary. Thank you for your leadership.
This golden nugget of 7 questions just got printed and I will ask them verbatim to my family before we launch into an epic road trip in July. Heck, I might even ask the same questions to ensure I enjoy the coming two weeks before we launch.
Brett – I’m also eager to share these questions with my extended family when we all come together later this summer. With a group of nearly 25 of us, I’m sure there will be lots of incredible moments to share with one another and this mindset sets us up for a rich and rewarding time together.
