“You’re cool,” I told my 10-year-old daughter, attempting to sound cool myself.

“Dad,” she said with a disappointed look on her face. “I am definitely not cool.”

“Yes you are!” I said with greater enthusiasm, seizing the apparent opportunity to build her confidence.

She looked at me as if I was making her walk on glass in her bare feet. “Dad!” she said. “Cool stands for Constipated, Over-rated, Out-of-style, Loser.” She rolled her eyes as if I was born yesterday. “Definitely, Dad. Do not call me cool.”

I didn’t know what to say. But suddenly I wasn’t sure trying to be cool around my daughter was in my best interest.

Is your team evolving its “common language”? Are you more effective at communicating with one another than you were a year ago? Answering “yes” means you’re staying competitive.
