It appears to be a contradiction: To unite the talent of a team the independent motives of each team member must be identified and honored.
One-team doesn’t mean one motive. The team, of course, has one purpose. The motives, however, the reasons for achieving that purpose can be as numerous and varied as the letters in an alphabet.
This is why so many teams struggle: Members assume they know why decisions and actions are important to those with whom they work.
Teams consistently achieve more when the members of a team can answer this question: Why do I care? Fireworks occur – big breakthroughs – when we honor how our peers answer this question in our decision making.
