They say you don’t get to pick your family. Well, most of us didn’t get to pick our teammates, either.

Just because we have to work on this project together doesn’t mean I have to listen to you. Rather than drone on and on about all the positions you’ve held, the glories achieved in your last place of employment, the schools you’ve attended, the achievements you’ve amassed or the people you know, tell me a story about:

  • How you thought you’d failed until you discovered an answer inside you
  • The most humbling lesson you learned
  • How those around you inspire you to be better
  • The things you’d do differently if you had the chance

If you want people to listen to you, it’s worth the reminder: They’re listening for your character.
