How long will it take to get out of this mess?

We can find clues by studying how the successful focus. Consider:

  • Those with the discipline of exercising each day don’t focus on the pain which occurs as they enter the exercise. Instead, as they begin, they see and feel the experience they’ll have when they complete their workout.
  • Those who regularly deliver projects with excellence don’t dwell on why progress is so difficult; instead, they obsess on the euphoria of what it’s like to hear a customer say, “This is the best I’ve ever experienced.”

As research Emily Balcetis points out in her new book, Clearer, Closer, Better, when we focus on an outcome in the future (rather than only the step in front of us), our minds create the illusion of proximity. And when we believe we’re close to our destination, it generates an energy – and the actions – that enable us to succeed.

As a leader, can you see yourself beyond what’s difficult? Your team can’t until you can.

(Help us see what’s possible – sooner.)
