You could get lucky and find that perfect present which makes a beloved family member say, “This is amazing. You’re amazing. I’ll always cherish this gift – and you!” But let’s face it: The odds of finding such a gift are stacked against you.

Which is why many people default into thinking “time” is the perfect gift to give loved ones. After all, up until now, there’s a good chance those you love the most have only gotten your 2021 leftovers.

The fact remains, however: There are plenty of families who spend a lot of time together and they’re still miserable. (“I’ll take another round of eggnog, please.”)

So, if time isn’t the perfect gift – what is?

A clue lies in remembering what each of us is longing for: Meaning. Purpose or an understanding of what makes life worthwhile is core to everyone’s existence.

How do you gift wrap meaning for a family member? You don’t. (You can’t.) However, you can say things that strengthen the significance or value another person feels.

While you will likely think of more specific or personal words, here are statements that when sincerely communicated are a gift for others to hear:

  • I believe you are perfect just the way you are.
  • You are here for a unique and important reason.
  • I love being your mom/dad, and here’s why…
  • You have taught me how to be a better person.
  • Our relationship may not be worthy of a movie, but it’s perfect for me.

Having meaning in life is often accomplished by being meaningful to others. Informing another person that they have a profound influence on you is to communicate to them that they are significant.

The gift a family member unwraps will be soon forgotten. The gift a loved one receives when they learn how meaningful they are to you – this feeling lasts forever.

(Who needs to hear from you?)
