leadershipA crazy idea: What if every company had to adopt and use the same organizational values? For example: Imagine it was mandated that you and your competitors all had to embrace communication, trust, innovation, alignment, engagement and collaboration as your corporate values.

What outcomes would be created?

The answer: The same results being delivered today.

Organizations spend months and millions of dollars identifying their values . . . then spend minutes and pennies developing the skill (and it is a skill) within their employees to model the incumbent behaviors.

Logically, because every organization embraces the italicized values above, companies struggle to communicate to the market “we’re different and better.”

Where does this leave us?

It is precisely where we differentiate who we are. Or most importantly, provide further evidence that we are the leaders – the people – we know we are. The heroes among us (those whose teams achieve because human potential is activated) are undaunted by any lack of morality around them. They know the way forward, and use every interaction to strengthen their principled approach.

Because who we are determines both the quality of what we do and our experience of life.

The next meeting on the calendar is the next opportunity. How will you activate what matters most?
