Craig, I very much appreciated your comment in this space, and I know it is a great start to beginning the engagements with great intention. What I also found to be true are the following . . . Often when taking calls with colleagues from other global sites, I role model the above by stating how important it is for me to be present and listening, and therefore, what I will let them know is that I will listen with my eyes closed (so I can focus) and ask questions along the way to ensure I understood what I heard. When I speak, I’ll often mention that I cannot read body language as I would in the room and so I request specific feedback such as ‘what would need to be true to you in order to support this approach?’ and so on. I find that the more I can speak in brief comments along the way as I listen, it “feels” more like a conversation to others when they cannot see me. This is a way I earn and build trust.
Su – Your adds here are valuable – thank you! I especially appreciate 1) how you are communicating expectations as well as verbalizing what would typically be the body cues, and 2) closing your eyes while listening. Talk about focus – outstanding – going to use that on my call today!

Great post, Craig. Thank you for sharing. To your question: the answer sums up to trust. Trust yourself, recognize the trust being bestowed upon us by our employer through the medium of teleconference, and consider the value of that trust to all parties concerned. It is so valuable that the loss of it is destructive and costly, and the development it profoundly rewarding-in productivity and all of which that may subsequently insue thereafter. Team building, revenue growth, etc… As the saying goes, “to thine own-self be true,” even during the group call. Make it a great day!
