Can I do this?

A lot of employees are asking that question. And to be certain, they are not wondering if they can hit a number, build a widget faster or serve more customers. They already know the answer to that question: Yes.

What employees want to know is: Can I deliver what is expected of me – in a manner that is fulfilling and meaningful to me?

Weak teams are punished quickly now. Led by leaders who are unaware, intimidated, do not care or are unskilled in their ability to mobilize hearts and minds, these teams have embarked on a journey of self-destruction.

The teams I am seeing meet this new moment, who are becoming stronger and healthier as they move deeper into 2022, have several things in common, including:

  • Team members have a process to strengthen their emotional well-being and mental health. As a result, they can tell the truth about their experience – without being victims to their circumstances.
  • Team members create a new relationship with change. They have moved beyond operating with binary thinking (beginning/ending, good/bad, success/failure). Instead, they see their work on a continuous spectrum. Their “just-move-forward” attitude simplifies the forward.
  • The leaders of these team consistently ask: How confident are you that we will succeed? And what would give you greater confidence? These leaders know that the emotions of their employees will always dictate results.

Can I do this? The leader who supports team members in answering that question will prepare the team to meet this moment.

(And what a big moment it is.)
