What is the identity of your team?

  • We’re capable. (You’re not.)
  • We’re innovative. (Not really.)
  • We handle change well. (No you don’t.)
  • Our culture makes everyone better. (Dream on.)
  • The value we create is uniquely coveted by our customer. (Nope.)

What’s true about your team? And is that truth aligned with what you must accomplish in the year ahead?

Many professionals are on teams that have destructive or lousy identities. Too seldom are actions taken to intentionally create an identity that mobilizes hearts and minds in the direction people must go.

A group increases the likelihood they’ll win when they identify as winners.

You’re wise to proactively shape the identity of your team that aligns with your 2024 objectives. Among your longest levers:

  • The beliefs team members hold. Remember: Where your teammates focus is where their energy will go.
  • The values you operationalize. Remember: The actions that are rewarded the most reveal what a group values the most.
  • How others in your organization perceive your team matters. Remember: The stories your colleagues tell one another are choices in a narrative you can shape.

To meet the evolving needs of our global clients and further inspire our team, we’re intentionally evolving our identity. If you’ve got a moment, check out our new landing page. (If you know a Verus Global team member, they’d love to hear what you think.)

What strikes me as we take this step: The exercise is remarkably energizing for stakeholders. There’s a propulsion, a thrust forward.

Changing your organization’s website isn’t required to evolve your team’s identity. But it’s worth asking: If your team had a website could team members align on what it would say? And would the words energize everyone?

Who are you?
